The winners of the Coney Island Board of Trade and Astella Development Corp.’s Black History Month Contests were honored at a meeting of the Board at the Coney Island branch of the Brooklyn Public Library. The winner of the History Essay Contest is Mariah Madison, a student at Abraham Lincoln High School, and the winner of the History Hunt is Jaylene Quevedo, a student at IS 303. The winners were given debit cards from Astella and received citations from Councilman Domenic Recchia.
The contest rules and application appeared in an issue of Astella’s newsletter, Astella Action News, and was distributed throughout Coney Island.
For the History Hunt, contestants were instructed to locate particular Black History Month posters placed in the storefront windows of Mermaid Ave. merchants by Astella and the Coney Island Board of Trade and answer questions based on the biographies on the posters of famous African Americans throughout history and community leaders.
